News and Opportunities for the
Virginia Travel Industry

Rita McClenny
Dear Friends and Partners,

Out of the gate with exciting news: Virginia’s tourism revenues had another record-breaking year in 2018 by reaching $26 billion, a 4.4% increase over 2017. Visitor spending has continued to grow nine years in a row. At the local level, we are also seeing similar patterns with every locality and region in Virginia showing an increase in travel expenditures in 2018 compared to 2017. Consumers’ appetite for unique experiences has increased travel demand to an all-time high. As we begin the final stretch of 2019, we are excited about a number of opportunities coming up in the weeks and months ahead.

50 Years of Love - Virginia is for Lovers

50 Years Of LOVE

Dear Partners,
As our Summer of LOVE comes to a close, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for your wonderful enthusiasm, creativity, and hard work as we celebrated 50 Years of LOVE. There were so many outstanding events, promotions, and special products, and it has been a true delight to see how this celebration came to life across the Commonwealth.

50 years ago, the iconic “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan was created. Since then, it has been an emblem for unforgettable vacations in Virginia. While 2019 presented an opportunity to celebrate Virginia is for Lovers, it also provided us with an amazing opportunity to look at destinations across the state and underscore what makes the Commonwealth so very special—and that includes each of you. You work every day to improve your communities, making them even more vibrant, inviting, and dynamic. It’s no wonder why visitors keep coming back, again and again, to experience everything Virginia has to offer.

Thank you for all you do. Cheers to another 50 years and beyond!

    Thou Must Re-Certify!

If you joined the Virginia Green Travel program longer than 2 years ago and haven’t re-certified, you are now officially no longer Virginia green-certified. We are trying to be very flexible with our partners during this process, but the Virginia Green logo will be removed from your listings and search-filters with VTC absolutely by the end of 2019. You would also be asked to remove the Virginia Green logo from your facility, website and sale materials. So please re-certify! All of the Virginia Green Travel Certification information is found here – and you will see that there are now 2 levels of certification from which to choose.
