Gabriel Archer survived his wounding through both hands at the landing in Cape Henry to become the colony's secretary and an admirer of Virginia Indians' skills. Powhatan risked the long-held respect of approximately 30 tribes reporting to him by practicing diplomacy and trading with the English, sometimes saving them from starvation while his kinsman Opechancanough opposed his generosity.
