Jamestown Sails into History with New Bermuda Postage Stamps

-Two stamp designs commemorate America's 400th Anniversary and Bermuda's unique ties to Jamestown Settlement-

RICHMOND, Va. - Today Bermuda marked America's 400th Anniversary commemoration with the release of "Bermuda to Jamestown" postage stamps. Bermuda officials presented the special stamps commemorating the anniversary and the unique connection between Bermuda and Jamestown at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator John Warner accepted the stamps on behalf of Virginians.

"These new stamps will help carry the story of Jamestown to potential visitors in Bermuda and beyond," said Alisa Bailey, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. "They are a beautiful tribute to Jamestown, Virginia and our shared history with Bermuda.

2007 marks the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown settlement, which has a unique connection with Bermuda. In 1609, Virginia Company settlers wrecked on Bermuda while traveling from England to Jamestown. The settlers survived the wreck and built two ships, the Deliverance and the Patience, which they sailed into Jamestown in 1610, bringing provisions and reinforcements to the settlement. A few settlers remained on the island and helped establish Bermuda.

The special "Bermuda to Jamestown" postage stamps depict views of the Deliverance sailing out of St. George's, Bermuda and on to the Jamestown settlement. Bermuda created the special stamps to commemorate America's 400th Anniversary, an 18-month series of events and programs across Virginia honoring Jamestown as America's first permanent English settlement.
