Maps available for Capt. John Smith's Trail.
James River trail follows explorer's footsteps.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) today unveiled travel maps for Capt. John Smith's Trail, a boat and auto tour along the james River. Developed to complement Jamestown 2007 - America's 400th Anniversary, the route includes 40 parks, historic sites and museums between Richmond and Newport News.

Virginia Tourism Corporation Selects BCF to Develop Future Advertising
The Virginia Tourism Corporation has selected BCF, a Virginia Beach- and Richmond-based agency, to spearhead its $3-million annual advertising program. The firm was selected by a team of Virginia tourism industry leaders, who reviewed seven written proposals and three oral presentations, to win the highly coveted account.

Governor Kaine Announces New High in Tourism
Spending in Virginia in 2005
Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced
record growth in spending by tourists in Virginia in 2005— $16.5
billion, a 9.6 percent increase over the 2004 figure of $15 billion.
Preliminary data from the Virginia Tourism Corporation also indicates
207,000 Virginians are directly employed in the tourism industry,
with a total 2005 payroll of $4.1 billion.

Virginia and Maryland National Scenic Byways to Get Tourism Marketing Boost from Federal Grant
The National Scenic Byways of Virginia and Maryland will get a tourism marketing boost thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Capital Region USA, Inc., a non-profit organization responsible for marketing Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., as a unified travel destination in targeted overseas markets, announced that it has received a $94,748 grant to fund a marketing initiative promoting the scenic byways of Maryland and Virginia.

The Society of American Travel Writers Names Pamplin Historical Park Recipient of Its Phoenix Award
Pamplin Historical Park and National Museum of the Civil War Soldier today received the Society of American Travel Writers' 2005 Phoenix Award at the news conference held by Travel South Showcase at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. SATW announced the award at its annual convention last fall in Las Vegas; but the award is traditionally presented during a significant tourism-industry event in the winner's state.

West Virginia Native Alisa Bailey Reappointed as Virginia Tourism Chief
Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced on Friday, Jan. 26, that Charleston native, Alisa L. Bailey, will continue to serve as president and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation, a position she has held since 2003. Prior to her appointment, Bailey served as the West Virginia Bureau of Commerce Chief and West Virginia Tourism Commissioner.

Virginia Shows Off to Convention of Top Tourism Industry Buyers and Travel Media
More than 700 tourism professionals from the United States and Canada will experience Virginia as a travel destination when Travel South USA - America's oldest and largest regional marketing organization - brings its annual Showcase convention to the Greater Richmond Convention Center, February 18-20. Millions of potential tourism dollars from future tourists are at stake as at least 280 supplier representatives from 12 southern states vie for the attention of more than 190 buyers, including group-tour operators and travel-service providers in a swirling, four-day marketplace that determines a lot of tourism-product offered to consumers.

Virginia Tourism Survey Confirms Potential Impact of 'The New World'
A recent East Coast survey confirms that the state of Virginia may host more tourists this year as a result of The New World, an epic film about Jamestown, Virginia, starring Colin Farrell as John Smith. State officials anticipate that the film, released nationally January 20, will help boost tourism because it's based on Virginia history and was also filmed in Virginia.
