- Become familiar enough with the publication, broadcasting station or Internet outlet that you will know what it is most suitable.
- Find out what kind of stories they're interested in and how they want the information presented.
- Know their deadlines.
- Address your release or pitch to the right person, preferably the reporter who ordinarily covers your activities, or at least to the right department. If in doubt, consult a media directory.
- Put a contact name, email address and telephone number on every release, and make sure that contact is available to take media calls and answer questions.
- Save news conferences for really special announcements.
- Be honest. It's better to say, "I'm sorry I can't answer that," than to say, "No comment."
- Send images with identifying information.
