President's Notes

Many of you have heard the news that due to state budget shortfalls, the Virginia Department of Transportation has had to make significant cuts to the agency’s operations.  As part of the plan to address revenue shortfall, VDOT will close 19 rest areas which includes the Manassas Welcome Center.  The rest areas will close on July 21 and notification went up today.  The Manassas Welcome Center will close on September 16.

We are working with our Welcome Center staff and local visitor center partners to communicate effectively with travelers affected by these closures.

These are challenging times and while no one in the tourism industry is happy about this situation, it is imperative that we now focus on the future and pull together to ensure the greatest quality of service to the traveling public.

On the heels of Virginia is for Lovers being named one of the top ten campaigns of all time, we can be confident that the tourism industry remains strong.  Thank you for your partnership.

If you would like more specific information about the VDOT rest area closures, please visit their Web site: http://www.virginiadot.org/newsroom/statewide/2009/rest_area_closures_to41490.asp
