President's Notes

May 10-18, 2008 is National Tourism Week. With the state budget diminished, there is no better time to educate public officials, public opinion and business leaders and the public in general about the importance of your business –and our industry—to the economy. Collectively, we bring tourists to Virginia. They spend money—big money. Tourism is a $17 billion industry, providing jobs for 208,000 Virginians and bringing in $1.2 billion in state and local taxes. Furthermore, a healthy tourism industry means that the tourism businesses in the Commonwealth prosper AND that means a better quality of life for all Virginians.

On our industry site, find a tool kit that can be used next week or at any time to help us spread the word! After all, tourism is not just your business---it’s everybody’s business. See you at the VA-1 Conference, September 10-11 in beautiful Roanoke, Virginia.

Building a Creative Economy in Southwest Virginia: Arts, Culture and Sustainable Development May 19 and 20, 2008 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, VA. The term "creative economy" has come to describe economic development strategies that cultivate home grown businesses and entrepreneurship, that build on the cultural, artistic and natural assets of a region, that engage the community directly, and that are ecologically sustainable. In Southwest Virginia, this has involved a wide range of enterprises, from artisan, craft and traditional music venues, to organic farms and "green building" ventures. Learn about this emerging creative economy and its potential for strengthening our communities and overall economic health. For more information visit www.roundthemountain.org.

The Entrepreneur Express Workshops are designed to provide information on available business resources and deliver practical, hands-on training covering key elements of business practice.
