President's Notes

As the General Assembly begins its session, I thought I would share with you the major changes that are proposed for the VTC Budget.

Proposed Decreases to Virginia Tourism Budget:
  • Remove $250,000 annual funding for Jamestown
  • Continue budget reductions made this year - $812,763 annually
  • Reduce tourism micro-grant program from $750,000 annually to $375,000
  • Eliminate "pass through" or specifically mandated programs including Virginia Broadcasters Assoc., Outdoor Advertisers Assoc., Coalfield Authority, Tredegar and Virginia Foundation for the Humanities--$785,000 annually
Proposed Budget Increases:
  • Add pass through funding for Daniel Boone Visitor Center--$100,000 annually
  • From Non-General Funds – Appropriation from DMV license fee (formerly designated for Jamestown) $2.5 million annually
  • Film - $200,000 annually for Governor’s Motion Picture Opportunity Fund
As our competition continues to get budget increases and as the cost of marketing increases, we must ensure that VTC has the tools in the tool box to get more tourists to your destinations. The members of the GA and their staff are very approachable. Any assistance you can provide in this regard is appreciated.

As you know, tourism is one of Virginia’s most powerful industries, bringing in $17.7 billion dollars in spending, supporting 208,000 jobs and generating $1.2 billion in state and local taxes. I appreciate your support and partnership in working to ensure the strength of our industry.

buttonVTC Marketing Leverage Program Spring 2008 Applications open on January 21, 2008
The Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) Marketing Leverage Program is designed to stimulate new tourism marketing programs through the creation of local, area, and regional tourism partnerships. The objective of this program is to leverage limited marketing dollars, resulting in increased visitor spending. A minimum of three partners must partner in the application. Applications are reviewed based upon the determination of the audience (market research), the program (what is the message and how will that message be delivered), and the effectiveness of the program (performance measures on how well the message was delivered). Additional requirements contained in the VTC Marketing Leverage Program Application and Guidelines must also be met. The next round of applications will open on January 21, 2008 with a deadline for applications of April 1, 2008. Awards will be announced in late April 2008.
Applications can be downloaded beginning January 21 from http://www.vatc.org/development/funding.asp.

Virginia on the Big Screen
National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the sequel to the successful action-adventure film National Treasure again uses history as the centerpiece of an action-filled quest to unlock the secrets hidden in iconic historic places. Virginia’s Mount Vernon, and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, both located in Alexandria, Virginia, are two locations featured in the film. Mount Vernon was particularly well represented, as it is identified as Mount Vernon on the screen. There are several beautiful shots of the house and grounds at night, during the party scene staged there. Both locations are Virginia historic sites, and should see tourism benefits from their appearance in the film.
If you would like more information on how to get your location used in a film, click here to go to the Virginia Film Office website.
