As many of you know, VTC—like many state agencies, has suffered considerable budget cuts during the past year and a half. As a result of the most recent round of state budget cuts, Virginia Welcome Centers will not be staffed on Tuesday and Wednesdays, —our lowest traffic days. This change began December 1. Restroom facilities will still be available to travelers 24/7. State travel guides, maps, and assistance through 1-800-VISITVA will also assist travelers during non-staffed times. Additionally, VTC will close the King George Welcome Center.
These most recent cuts follow staff reductions and marketing cuts that have eliminated our television advertising program in out-of-state markets. Our current budget of $15 million is below 1996 levels.
As always the remainder of our budget is being directed to the marketing plan in the most cost-efficient manner, focusing upon strategies that bring in the best return on that investment. Now, more than ever, VTC needs your partnership to execute the state’s tourism marketing in order to extend our Virginia Is For Lovers - Live Passionately brand, recognized as a symbol of the premier vacation experience. Thanks to all of you who have participated in our programs and I trust we have your understanding in these tough economic times.
