President's Notes

As Earth Day 2008 approaches, VTC is preparing a major marketing push of Virginia Green – the state's effort to reduce the environmental impact of tourism and travel businesses.

According to a recent study, 58.5 million U.S. travelers (38%) would pay more to use travel companies that strive to protect and preserve the environment.

Virginia Green is the first step in helping businesses not only realize the cost savings associated with sound environmental practices but also in encouraging the expansion of those practices in their business—thus satisfying the discerning traveler.

If you are ready to go Virginia Green, here are three easy ways to get onboard.

  1. Work with your hotels, restaurants and attractions to get them registered as Virginia Green.  Click here to learn about the simple steps towards Virginia Green certification.
  2. Get your eco-tourism and outdoor recreation destinations listed on Virginia.org.
  3. DMOS – consider developing a Green Package or Getaway to include:  a stay at a Virginia Green facility, dining at a Virginia Green restaurant and environmentally-friendly activities (visit to park, hiking, biking, eco tour, etc.)

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work to market Virginia as a world-class, eco-friendly travel destination.

  • bullet Admin Tool Tip
Events Dates/Hours: Have an event that is more than one day? How about an annual event? Take advantage of the Dates/Hours button on the Administration Tool to add individual dates to your event. Adding the date for the following year for your annual event also ensures that the listing stays on the site year round.

Also, be sure to update the listing instead of creating a new one for a recurring event. Many events are used in feature stories with links to the listing. If you delete the listing and create a new one, it will result in a "Attraction Not Found" error when a visitor clicks the link in the feature story.
