President's Notes

It was great to see such a good turn out at the VA-1 Tourism Conference in Hampton Roads.

At that conference we detailed the marketing plan and the overall tourism vision we believe will strengthen tourism. Basically, we see superior marketing, tourism development and education as the three goals necessary to achieve sustainable tourism growth in The Commonwealth.

A recent functional audit of VTC revealed that there was increased need for communication and outreach to the industry. As we moved to reorganize the office, we were hit with budget cuts this year. These cuts were quite challenging but our goal to provide you with more services was the driving force of a reorganization of VTC. In the next several months you will hear about the partnership, development and educational assistance we intend to provide. Further, VTC has established as its new agency vision to be a “creative and dynamic organization blazing new paths in marketing for the tourism and film industry.” We can only achieve the foregoing with your continued enthusiasm.

I know I speak for all of us at VTC when I say we value your professionalism, your advice and your support.

buttonFredericksburg Welcome Center Grand Opening
VTC, in partnership with VDOT, is excited to announce the opening of the newly constructed Virginia Welcome Center at Fredericksburg, I-95 southbound. This state-of-the-art, environmentally responsible facility will open to the traveling public on October 3rd and the grand opening celebration will be held on Wednesday, October 10th, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Historically, the Virginia Welcome Center at Fredericksburg is the busiest Welcome Center in Virginia, counseling almost half a million Virginia travelers each year. These travelers contributed to the $17.7 billion in visitor spending during 2006, a 7.2 percent increase over 2005. The re-opening of this facility once again places our travel counselors on the frontline; encouraging more travelers to stay longer, visit more attractions and further enjoy the Virginia experience.

Please mark your calendar and join us for this festive and historic event. For more information please contact Sandra Hicks, shicks@virginia.org. We look forward to seeing you there.

buttonTravel Writing Tips
Jane Wooldridge, travel editor of the Miami Herald, passes along these tips for good travel writing: Stories with strong news- and trend-pegs are more likely to sell, but many of these are also provided by the wire services. Articles with good story-telling that editors can’t find on the wires are in demand, as are regional travel articles. A shortage exists of tech-savvy travel articles and of good, experiential articles about traveling with children. Keep these tips in mind in pitching editors and freelancers.
