Beyond Jamestown
VTC was thrilled with the statewide response to the America’s 400th Anniversary. While we will not know the exact visitation impact, the media coverage alone has given travel to Virginia a greater awareness. Further, as a support agency to the Jamestown 2007 offices, VTC assisted in many public relations strategies that helped boost awareness of the 400th. These efforts, not the least of which was Virginia’s Royal Welcome: The Queen’s Visit, required intensive human resources from VTC. That partnership effort of hosting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth garnered $50 million in publicity alone and VTC was honored to receive an Odyssey Award for excellence in international marketing from the Travel Association of America.
As we continue the momentum in 2008, we will be focusing our efforts on renewing our strong ties to the industry, engaging you in outreach and new partnerships, engage in new and innovative marketing strategies and working to ensure that our industry in unified in its efforts to blaze new trails in tourism commerce.
Thanks to all the industry for your continued engagement and partnerships.

Fredericksburg Welcome Center Unveiled
After more than a year, patience is rewarded. On October 10th Alisa Bailey and other dignitaries cut the ribbon to officially reopen the Virginia Welcome Center at Fredericksburg. Unveiled was a state-of-the-art, environmentally responsible, 14,500-square-foot facility that incorporates both a Safety Rest Area and Virginia Welcome Center. The Safety Rest Area, which is open 24-hours a day, features real-time travel and weather information screens, indoor vending, hiking path and picnic area.
The VWC at Fredericksburg typically hosts almost 500,000 visitors annually. The new layout will better serve our Virginia travelers with an expanded brochure and travel research area. With this expansion comes more advertising opportunities for our industry partners; up-to-date advertising mediums such as enhanced image panels, branding banners and interactive displays may be introduced. Watch for the announcement of these new designs as they become available.
In addition, the welcome center houses a new Community Meeting Room. This multi-use room, complete with built-in PC, large plasma screen and AV equipment, is available for public meetings, training sessions and industry demonstrations.
For more information about the VWC at Fredericksburg or to request the Community Meeting Room, please contact Janet Kimble, Tourism Relations Manager. You can reach her at 540-786-8344 or JKimble@virginia.org |

VTC Expands Virginia’s Welcome Center System
Virginia travelers now have more options for travel assistance with the expansion of Virginia’s Welcome Center System. VTC in conjunction with VDOT has just completed the conversion and opening of the new East Coast Gateway Welcome Center at New Kent. Previously this facility, located on I-64E at mile marker 213 , was only a safety rest area. Now, with a few renovations, this facility will incorporate a full-service Virginia Welcome Center staffed with VTC’s premier travel counselors - ready to assist visitors as they roam Virginia’s highways and byways.
Based on VDOT’s historical data, we anticipate that this may become one of the busiest centers in the commonwealth. The center is currently open with limited hours until the completion of staff placement and training. For more information about this new center, please contact Sandra Hicks. 804-545-5583 or SHicks@virginia.org

Reliving Dirty Dancing
Twenty years ago, the feature film Dirty Dancing, shot at Mountain Lake Resort in Giles County, was released in theatres. Dirty Dancing has been a phenomenon from the beginning. From the first day of shooting, it was a race to complete the film before the leaves fell and crew members spent a great deal of time spray painting autumn leaves green to keep the illusion of summer. Recently a British reality show, Dirty Dancing: The Time of Your Life and a documentary entitled Seriously Dirty Dancing were shot at the resort. Those who want to relive the excitement of the film are invited to Mountain Lake Resort to enjoy a Dirty Dancing Weekend featuring tours, lessons, and a dance. The next event date is November 16 and 17, 2007.
