Virginia experienced a great event last month — Travel South Showcase — when more than 600 of our colleagues descended upon the Commonwealth for fam tours, business appointments, networking and entertainment.  This was the first major marketplace in Virginia in 20 years.

As many of you may know, Travel South Showcase is part of the 12-state Travel South regional tourism effort.  The marketing we do is directed toward the Canadian market and the domestic group market, and there is a fantastic new Travel South website which is soliciting all of us for great new content and links: http://www.travelsouthusa.com/travel-trade/. The more we populate this website, the more Virginia is exposed to the Canadian and domestic markets.

As many of you may know, Canada remains Virginia’s #1 international market.  In 2004, we experienced a 17.5% increase in Canadian expenditures compared to 2003.  Don’t miss this opportunity to further our own Virginia efforts with our collective Travel South strategies.

"Bruce Almighty" Sequel To Be Filmed in Virginia This Spring
"Evan Almighty" starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman is set to start filming in late March in Crozet, Madison County, Richmond, and other locations. Set construction has already begun in Crozet. The production's location scout lives in Crozet, and the film's director is an alumnus of UVA. Mary Nelson, communications manager for the Virginia Film Office said, "Typically a movie that films on location leaves about 25-30 percent of its budget behind . . . so the impact is significant. If it's a $40 million movie, it could be a $10 million impact."
