While most folks are enjoying winter fun in Virginia by going whale watching in Virginia Beach, enjoying one of Virginia’s outstanding museums or taking on the snowy slopes at one of our four ski areas, the VTC is busy watching the winter action at the General Assembly! As many of you know, Governor Warner proposed several budget amendments this session that will positively impact the Virginia tourism industry. These proposals are part of an economic development initiative branded VA Works. Tourism proposals include itinerary-based trail development, seed money for a Rails to Trails system, tourism development expertise and a statewide effort to promote Virginia artisans and crafts. All of these initiatives deserve our support. Visit /virginiaworks.htm to find out more.

    Catchy Promotion Idea

Small towns with new shops, eateries and/or residential/retail communities can promote themselves as energetic yet largely undiscovered areas for visitors. The Finger Lakes communities in New York saw a rise in tourism in 2003 and 2004; and marketing staff there credit their promotion of "small towns with pizzazz."
