  • President's Notes

I am so pleased to share with you that as a result of Governor Warner’s Virginia Works, a program to inspire increased economic development — particularly in economic depressed areas — VTC will be engaged in several important activities during the next year. These areas include technical assistance with tourism planning assistance, itinerary-trail development and promotion, working with Housing and Community Development on an artisan network and artisan centers and outdoor recreation, particularly with Rails To Trails.

I am so gratified that the governor has included these exciting new programs as a means to inspire continued growth in tourism. As these programs take shape, we will be sharing that information — coming to a VTC Dashboard soon. I hope all of you are having a banner summer!

    Virginia Tourism Update

Online Form for "What's New" Submissions
VTC's Public Relations and Group Sales have combined efforts, so you can submit your "What's New" entry online this year and it will go to both departments — HOORAY! Be sure to submit your new or renovated/expanded attractions, accommodations and travel services by July 15 to be sent to the media, group tour and travel shows, AAA and the travel industry. /pr/whatsnewva2006.htm

Leads Available from International Pow Wow
Sales leads from the International Pow Wow in March are now available from Kimberly Petersen at kpetersen@virginia.org

Historic B&Bs — Story Ideas Needed
Does your B&B have an unusual story inside its walls? Is it haunted? Did someone famous sleep there? Was it used during the Civil War as a military hospital? Please submit the name, phone number and website of your historic B&B and its legend to Judy Watkins at jwatkins@virginia.org.

    Popular VTC Publications
VTC publications continue to be extremely popular with consumers! From January through May, VTC mailed out more than 302,000 publications — travel guides, Civil War and other niche information. Our inventory of the 2005 Golf Guide and 2005 Travel Guide are extremely low and are no longer available in bulk quantities. We will resume bulk mailing of the Golf Guide and Travel Guide in 2006, when next year's editions are printed.

    New Jamestown Magazine
Psst . . . it's no secret. VTC, in partnership with Leisure Publishing, announced a new publication — Jamestown Secrets — that will be released in October, just prior to the release of the major motion picture, The New World. The magazine's content will showcase signature events and programs for 2007, the heritage of Jamestown, interviews, archaeology news and itineraries for all regions of Virginia. For more information, visit /advertising/VirginiaSecrets.htm or email Judy Watkins at jwatkins@virginia.org

    Attention Jamestown 2007 Partner Communities
Events that are connected to America's 400th Anniversary: Jamestown 2007 will be included in the Jamestown Secrets magazine to be published in mid-October. Please submit your Jamestown 2007 events to the Virginia.org website by July 25, 2005 to be included in this first publication of 100,000 copies. For more information, email Judy Watkins at jwatkins@virginia.org

    Admin Tool Tip
    bulletEvents Submission
VTC has added a new "media description" field to the Administration Tool for submitting events. This smaller description field will be used for events that are sent to the media. This will help in getting the events to the media quicker with less editing time. Events that do not have this "media description" will not be included in the listings provided to the media.
